CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Karen Fleming received her Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology and Community Counselling (Cum Laude) from Stellenbosch University. She has a particular interest in shorter term therapy approaches that focus on equipping individuals with practical tools to enhance mental as well as emotional wellbeing. These approaches include Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Her primary focus areas are in the treatment of depression, anxiety and stress management.

Karen’s clinical internship was completed through the University of Cape Town’s Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. She was a case manager at Valkenburg Hospital’s Women’s Mental Health Acute In-Patient Unit for those suffering from a broad range of psychiatric disorders. At Groote Schuur Hospital’s G22 Ward, Karen provided neuropsychological assessments and shorter-term individual psychotherapy. Karen also worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team at Red Cross Children’s Hospital Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (DCAP) where she provided psychotherapy for children.

In her Public Service year, Karen provided clinical psychology services to a number of hospitals and clinics in the Northern Cape. Her work focused primarily around helping adults and children cope with and recover from trauma.

Following her training, she co-founded the non-profit organisation, Coherence Foundation, aimed at providing psycho-education and therapeutic groups for children and their caregivers. She also started working in private practice in Sea Point. In conjunction to her individual therapy work, Karen and her colleague Kirsten Barnardt developed a series of stress reduction workshops for professionals in the startup sector which run yearly

For her individual therapy sessions, Karen’s aim is to engage with you in an collaborative process focused on holding struggle with compassion and on gaining new insights that can lead to constructive changes as well as an alleviation of distress.
