HOMEOPATH CAPE TOWN

DR DAPHNE LYELL (Homeopath & Integrative GP) has her practice at The White Lotus in Cape Town.

WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

HOMEOPATHY is a gentle, curative system of medicine that stimulates the body’s own mechanisms of defence and repair. Homeopathy was developed more than 200 years ago by the German physician, Samuel Hahnemann,

Homeopathy is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’ – whereby a substance taken in small amounts can cure the very same symptoms that it generates if administered to a healthy person over a period of time. Since only a living organism can heal itself, the homeopathic remedy works by acting as a stimulus to provoke the body’s innate healing response – thereby relieving symptoms associated with both acute and chronic disorders.

In Homeopathy, the best way to initiate this healing response, is by giving the patient the lowest necessary dose. If the dose given is too high, a patient may experience what is called an ‘aggravation’ – a temporary worsening in symptoms, before improvement sets in.

Due to this gentle approach, Homeopathy is one of the safest treatment forms to be used by patients of any age as well as animals.

Homeopathy is also a highly individualised form of medicine. To illustrate this, the consultation will always be directed at determining the patient’s subjective physical, mental and emotional experience and presenting symptoms at a specific time. Two patients exposed to the same cold virus may respond completely uniquely, with a differing set of symptoms and signs. One patient may present with a sore throat and headache, while the other may have a runny nose with clear discharge and burning eyes. Both are ‘caused’ by the same virus, but these different presentations require different remedies in Homeopathy.

HOMEOPATHY vs ALLOPATHY

This stands in contrast to allopathic (mainstream orthodox) medicine, in that instead of simply addressing symptoms, in Homeopathy it’s important to establish and treat the root cause of disease.

Allopathy instead, uses drugs to suppress and fight symptoms rather than supporting the body’s innate healing ability. This is part of a ‘disease fighting’ as opposed to a ‘health supporting’ approach. Allopathy is of great importance in the acute setting, but when addressing chronic conditions the medication often merely suppress symptoms and if these medications were to be discontinued, the symptoms would reappear.

Another difference between homeopathy and allopathic medicine is that the latter requires a clinical diagnosis in order to start treatment. With homeopathy the diagnosis is of lesser importance, while the whole presentation of the patient’s reaction to the disease and other areas affected in general (not only relating to disease) are key in deciding on treatment.

After starting with a homeopathic remedy, other seemingly ‘non-related’ symptoms may also improve. For instance, it is not uncommon in Homeopathy, when a patient is treated for eczema, that they also may experience improvement in sleep, appetite and mood.
