DR AVRIL COWLIN: CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
Bachelor of Arts (BA), BA.Honours, Psychology, MA (Masters in Clinical Psychology), PhD Clinical Psychology
Dr. Avril Cowlin trained as a clinical psychologist late in life, having travelled quite a circuitous route to get there. She initially studied fine art at UCT, changed to a general Bachelor of Arts and subsequently trained as a registered nurse. She ultimately went back to university to complete her undergraduate psychology, followed by Honours, Masters and Doctorate at Stellenbosch University as a very “mature student”.
These varied areas of interest and training have all added to her capacity to engage with patients across a broad spectrum, with an enriched capacity to understand their psychology.
Therapy is an interpersonal, collaborative process but one conducted in a very specific way. An experienced Psychologist can provide a safe, supportive and confidential setting which can allow the individual to explore problems, challenging circumstances and relational difficulties.
Dr. Cowlin constructs her therapy on the notion that each person who enters the room is unique. And consequently, she applies a holistic repertoire of understanding and practice. Depending on the individual needs, she may draw on components of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic understanding, narrative therapy, solution focused therapy (SFBT) and mindfulness.
But the most essential component of successful therapy is the warm and respectful connection made by two individuals.
